Be Careful What You Wish For...

Join Kaiapoi High School for an enchanting journey into the forest as we present Stephen Sondheim’s legendary musical masterpiece, Into the Woods.

What happens after "Happily Ever After"? This Tony Award-winning musical brings together your favorite fairy tale characters—Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), and a childless Baker and his Wife—as they venture into the woods to have their wishes granted.

But as they soon discover, the things we wish for often come with a price.

Forget the Disney versions! This is a witty, moving, and at times dark exploration of what it means to grow up and the consequences of our actions.

Directed by Julia Guthrey

Assistant Direction by Dylan Cheyne

Musical Direction by Jessie Rosewarne

Choreographed by Kate Hamilton and Talula Green

Produced by Celia Breen, Danielle Kaye, and Megan O'Connor for Kaiapoi High School.

A Showcase of Student Excellence

Our production of Into the Woods is more than just a show; it is the culmination of months of rigorous work and dedication from our talented rangatahi. This year, the Performing Arts department has reached new heights, and we are proud to spotlight the achievements of students, teachers and industry professionals.

Our Drama students have delved deep into the complex, psychological layers of Sondheim’s lead characters. Several senior students have taken on roles as stage managers, honing leadership skills that go far beyond the footlights.

The "Woods" are a living, breathing entity in this show, brought to life by the precision and grace of our Dance students. Working alongside teachers and guest choreographers, students have integrated contemporary and lyrical styles to navigate the intricate rhythms of the score.

Stephen Sondheim is notorious for having some of the most difficult vocal scores in musical theatre history. Our vocalists have risen to the challenge, mastering complex polyphonic harmonies and rapid-fire lyrical delivery.

It isn't just about those on stage. Our Backstage and Tech Crew consist entirely of students managing lighting plots, sound engineering, and intricate set transitions. Their technical proficiency ensures the magic of the woods truly comes to life.
