Event description

Are you fascinated by the world of bees? Do you like the idea of starting a hive of your own?

In this 3.5hr workshop, Claire Brown from Flametree Beekepers will introduce you to bee society, give you a brief history of beekeeping, and explain why bringing bees into your life is so enriching and fruitful. If weather permits, you will get dressed up in full beekeeping gear to look inside a real hive and get a glimpse into the day-to-day life of our honey bee.

Your workshop topics include:

  • Hive types and their characteristics
  • The amazing variety of honey bee products, including  honey tasting!
  • Practicalities to look into before getting bees
  • Essential equipment
  • Looking inside a beehive (weather permitting)

This workshop is sure to inspire you and help you decide whether or not beekeeping is for you. It is also a great first step towards the full day In depth Beekeeping workshop, which gives all the information you need to care for your own hive.

Before you book, please consider the following:

  • The site is a working farm and visitors must participate in a safety briefing before the workshop.
  • The terrain at the farm is particularly steep and slippery in parts. Though the workshop will take place primarily within our accessible education space, there is a possibility that participants will be required to walk across uneven or sloping ground. If you have mobility restrictions or any concerns about your ability to navigate the terrain, please contact us before booking.
  • Plants love rain and so do we! We don’t cancel workshops in wet weather unless there is a dangerous storm. Please come prepared for the weather.
  • Allergen advice: Our farm is home to domestic animals as well as bees, wasps, and macadamia trees. Please pack an EpiPen if allergic and keep it with you while on site.

All beekeeping workshop participants must:

  • Wear thick pants such as jeans and a long sleeved shirt. DO NOT wear black, as this is the colour of many of the bees natural predators.
  • Wear enclosed shoes or boots (sorry no thongs or sandals allowed).
  • Bring a hat and sunscreen or rain gear, depending on the weather forecast.
  • Bring a water bottle.
