Intro to Eco Printing and Plant Dye
Event description
Cultures across the globe have a rich history of using flowers, leaves, roots and even insects as a dyestuff. This was in the times before we had synthetic "red number 40" or "blue lake." This course will provide an introduction to humanity's shared history of working in partnership with plants for the sake of color. You will receive hands-on instruction covering effective fiber preparation to ensure lasting color as well as a tutorial on eco printing. This dye method offers a clear imprint of the flower into fabric that won't wash out or fade, truly immortalizing the plant.
Participants will receive:
- Pretreated cloth napkins or a tea towel ready to dye
- Pressed plains Coreopsis for eco printing
- Hands-on instruction with your pre-treated fabric (you will leave with a finished product!)
- Handouts with step by step tutorials on how to pre-treat the fabric yourself, tips for setting up a dye studio of your own, and access to videos covering several dye methods including eco printing, bundle dying and immersion baths should you wish to continue this practice outside our class time.
