This training provides an in-depth look at the dynamics of elder abuse, including its definitions, risk factors, and the barriers older adults face in seeking help. Participants will gain insight into the behaviors of perpetrators, the complexities of victim decision-making, and the role that professionals and community organizations like CHANA can play in supporting older adult victims of abuse and neglect.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Define elder abuse and identify signs of abuse and neglect.

  • Examine the risk factors for elder abuse and the lethality factors that increase the risk of homicide.

  • Discuss the tactics perpetrators use to justify their abusive behavior to victims and others.

  • Identify the challenges and barriers older adults face in disclosing abuse and seeking support.

  • Explore the professional role in supporting older adult victims of abuse.

  • Identify community resources, including CHANA, that assist older adult victims of abuse and violence.
