Event description

Do you support a person with intellectual disability?

Join us for this session which will introduce you to the basics of supported decision-making (SDM) and offer you practical tips for building your confidence as a decision supporter.

SDM is about providing practical assistance with decision making to enable people stay in control of their lives. It aims to replace substituted decision-making where people make decisions on behalf of others instead of them making their own decisions.

Presenters: Dr. Michelle Browning & Olivia Rowswell

Dr. Michelle is a Supported Decision Making (SDM) practice leader, who works with decision makers and their supporters all over Australia to build their confidence in making decisions and providing decision support.  Dr Michelle Browning will contribute to the session as our guest speaker.

Michelle is passionate about supporting individuals and organisations to develop their skill in the practice of supported decision-making. She is a Churchill Fellow and has completed doctoral research into the practice in Canada.

Olivia, a co-designer for the 'Power to You' project will co-facilitate this session with Dr. Michelle. Olivia is a keen figure skater and lover of musicals. She will share her valuable lived experience as a person with intellectual disability who has experienced both substituted and supported decision making.

At the end of the session, you will be given access to a free e-learning resources with more information on decision making and eight other topics that benefit supporters of people with disability.
