Event description

Step into a transformative space where theatre becomes a tool for dialogue, empowerment, and social change. This workshop introduces participants to the dynamic techniques of Theatre of the Oppressed, developed by Brazilian theatre-maker and activist Augusto Boal. Rooted in the belief that everyone can act and create change, these methods invite participants to explore systems of oppression and rehearse real-world solutions through performance.

The workshop will be led by Xris Reardon, a seasoned facilitator trained directly by Boal, who has been creating Forum Theatre productions across Victoria. Xris brings decades of experience in community-engaged arts and has just completed a RAWspace residency at the Theatre Royal, where she collaborated with Ally Stanton Cooke—a passionate theatre-maker and advocate for inclusive creative practice. Ally will co-facilitate this workshop, bringing fresh energy and insight from their recent collaboration.

Participants will engage in:

  • 🎲 Theatre games that build trust, awareness, and ensemble

  • 🧍Image Theatre to explore power dynamics through body and space

  • 🎭 Forum Theatre, where spect-actors intervene in scenes of oppression to explore alternatives

  • 🗣️ Group reflection and dialogue to deepen understanding and connection

Whether you're an artist, educator, activist, or simply curious, this workshop offers a chance to experience theatre as a rehearsal for revolution.
