Event description

Introducing nipaluna/Hobart’s new professional vocal ensemble - Sonus Lux!

Sonus Lux is a professional vocal ensemble, drawn together by our passion for choral music old and new. Each member contributes to the group with their experiences as conductors, singers and teachers, leading to the delivery of projects that challenge, move, and entertain audiences across Tasmania, as well as performers themselves.

This new ensemble gathers together musicians of all experiences and musical backgrounds. In its inaugural performance, Sonus Lux will feature sopranos Madeleine Dyer and Grace Ovens, altos Sebastian Allen and Tess Archer, tenors Alexander Rodrigues and Simon Milton, and basses Jonathan Wallis and Matthew Anning. Together, these leading Tasmanian musicians capture soundscapes unlike those heard in nipaluna/Hobart before!

We are excited to embark on this adventure by presenting a programme around our namesake - Sonus Lux (sound of light). Curated and directed by Sebastian Allen (alto), ‘Resounding Light’ draws on works from composers abroad and at home in Australia, featuring famous texts such as O Nata Lux and Lo, There is Light alongside contemporary writings Northern Lights and White Nights. Sonus Lux is also proud to present a number of Tasmanian premieres, including Joseph Twist’s The Peace of Wild Things, Clare Maclean’s We Welcome Summer, and Jake Runestad’s Spirited Light

Sonus Lux will give their inaugural performance in a concert on the 3rd of May at 2.30pm in the beautiful acoustic of Saint Mary’s Cathedral Hobart. The group will also feature in a performance hosted by the Hans Vonk Music House in Spreyton, Northern Tasmania.

Join us as we celebrate Sonus Lux’s beginnings and establish their place in Australia’s choral landscape!
