Talitha Balan is an emerging cosmopolitan Tasmanian artist whose ideas become public through painting, photography, calligraphy, video, performance, and installation. They relay some Buddhist ideas on emptiness, impermanence, interdependence, and non-Self to reclaim their South, and Southeast Asian identities. Their works also offer strategies for enhancing intersections and relationships between what may be considered some unnecessary polarizations in, old and new technologies, eastern and western, indigenous and immigrant worldviews, etc.

Talitha collaborates with members of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan’s multilateral traditional and contemporary art, not for profit organisation, VAST Bhutan (BT). Through colour theory, Talitha writes about how some VAST artists translate Buddhist art ideas, to English speaking audiences. They are a PhD candidate for Educational Research in higher education at Lancaster University (UK) and former lecturer for Central St Martins (UK).

The event is part of the De/Centre for Belonging, a multi-year art installation and public program series exploring paradoxes of belonging and social cohesion. This exhibition includes sensitive material, including themes of racism, injustices, and loss of life, which may be difficult for some visitors to experience. These works are shared in the spirit of truth-telling, dialogue, and learning. We encourage you to engage at your own pace.
