The ANU Art Collection, established in 1949, comprises over 2900 paintings, sculptures, drawings, limited edition prints, and ceramic and glass objects by significant artists. Displayed throughout the ANU campus, the collection encourages creative, cultural and intellectual engagement, promoting visual literacy and enriching student life through exposure to pleasurable, challenging and diverse aesthetic expression. The ANU is custodian to one of the finest and most wide-ranging collections of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art held by any Australian university, and these exemplary works serve to advance the status, recognition and lives of Australia’s First Nations Peoples.

The Drill Hall Gallery is the venue of choice for many of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, curators and collectors, continuing a proud tradition of impeccably presented landmark exhibitions accompanied by scholarly publications. All students, staff and visitors are welcome at the gallery. The Drill Hall Gallery provides the Canberra community and ANU with a selective program of high quality exhibitions of Australian and international art. The Gallery supports the arts in the Canberra region by presenting exhibitions developed in conjunction with the University’s wide-ranging academic interests and/or to coincide with major conferences and public events. National and international exhibitions – and works from the University’s own extensive collection – are features of the Gallery’s program. In addition to exhibitions, the gallery holds numerous public events throughout the year including exhibition related programs, lectures, music events, creative workshops and special events tailored to our Friends of the Drill Hall Gallery. Note that the Drill Hall Gallery building is closed for maintenance in the first half of 2024. To stay up to date with events in and around the gallery join our mailing list

Friends of the Drill Hall Gallery congregate throughout the year for cultural, social, intellectual, musical and literary delights in the company of a diverse community of interested and interesting art lovers. Join us on the last Friday of the month for our Friend’s Night soirée from 5:30pm-7:00pm at the Gallery, for lectures, visits to artists’ studios, book launches, concerts and more. Drill Hall Gallery Friends are supportive, greatly valued members of our gallery community and anyone is welcome to join.  Student membership is $40 per year.
