May in Melbourne, the perfect time of year to start slowing down and retreat indoors. Join us for a leisurely afternoon learning the basics of home based food preservation, followed by a shared meal of all our favorite fermented foods!

This will be the first workshop in a series that will focus on home based preservation methods. The focus of this workshop will be lacto-fermantation.

It is widely accepted that humans have been preserving food since 12,000BC and although in modern times we don't necessarily need to for survival reasons, we have seen a huge surge of interest in these traditional skills for a range of reasons.

Preserving our own food at home allows us:

A stock of healthy often homegrown foods, control over what is in our food, healthier food options, increased food security, opportunity to save money, preservation of traditional skills, minimization of food waste, a fun day often shared with friends!

During our workshop you will:

1. Be introduced to the basic methods of preservation for home use

2. Actually create three different fermentations to take home and watch in real time.

3. Sample fermentations at different stages to gain an understanding of the process.

3. Enjoy a shared catered lunch with a range of fermented foods and beverages.

Please bring along if possible:

An Apron and 3 clean jars to take home your creations (max 500 ml)

You will receive:

Three fermentations (made by you) to take home with you, plus:

A sourdough starter

A SCOBY to get your own kombucha started

Your own set of notes and recipe cards for future use

Notes:

All ingredients and equipment will be provided for you on the day.

We will then sit down to a shared meal of all our favorite fermented foods. The meal will be mostly gluten free and largely vegetarian. We apologise but are unable to cater to vegan diet at this time.
