Introduction to Image Classification (Aug 2025) - NCI
Event description
This workshop is being run as part of a collaboration between QCIF and National Computational Infrastructure (NCI).
Image classification is a fundamental task in computer vision, a field of artificial intelligence focused on teaching computers to interpret and understand visual information from the world. Image classification specifically involves the process of assigning a label or category to an input image. The goal is to enable computers to recognize and categorize objects, scenes, or patterns within images, just as a human would. With this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to perform an image classification task using a convolutional neural network (CNN). Through coding exercises in Python, attendees will load and pre-process a set of images to build, train and evaluate a CNN to make classification predictions.
This workshop will take place over two days, Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th August 2025 from 9:30am to 1:30pm AEST each day. Please only register if you can fully commit to attending both sessions.
FAQs
What should I bring into the event?
This is an online workshop, so you will need to provide your own computer, and have access to a reliable internet connection sufficient for video conferencing. A second monitor is highly recommended. This workshop will introduce you to working with Python on the NCI ARE platform, instructions will be provided prior to the workshop.
What prior experience do I need?
This lesson is designed for people who have experience with Python and are looking to jump straight into image classification. Previous completion of 'Introduction to Python (NCI)' or Software Carpentry 'Plotting and Programming in Python (PPP)' is recommended. We recognise that the jump is quite large from Introductory Python level knowledge into Image Classification so we have done our best to provide the content and code to support workshop participants.
Who should attend?
This workshop is open to all researchers from Australian universities and researchers from organisations utilising the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI).
How can I contact the organiser with any questions?
You can email training@qcif.edu.au.
What's the cancellation policy?
Cancellations are accepted up to 3 working days before the start of the workshop. If you do not join on the day without having cancelled beforehand, you may be blocked from attending any future QCIF training workshops.
