Introduction to Mammals - Theory and Practical Training
Description
The Furneaux Collective recently secured grant funding through Animals Tasmania to deliver much-needed wildlife carer training on Flinders Island.
The grant covers the travel costs for trainers from Wildlife Network Tasmania and subsidises the cost of training for local participants.
Lauren and Kane Maxwell have generously donated a wildlife carer's kit for every participant through their business, Matrix Geoscience. Naomi Creek, has also donated the trainers' accommodation at her place, The Nest.
To attend the practical training on 16th August, you must first have completed the online theory component which takes 6 - 8 hours. Please register for both by completing the form below.
After you register and pay, you will receive a link to complete the online theory course prior to the practical training.
Cost: $30 per participant. (This training normally costs $100, and your registration also includes a wildlife carer's kit valued at approximately $100.) Please include your first name, last name and email address so we can register you for the online component.

- What does the $30 fee include
The $30 registration contributes towards the cost of delivering the training locally, including airfares, car hire, hall hire and trainer fees. It is heavily subsidised through grant funding from Animals Tasmania and the Furneaux Collective. The full training is typically valued at around $100 and also includes a wildlife carer’s kit valued at approximately $100, generously donated by Matrix Geoscience.
- Do I need to complete the online theory before the practical session?
Yes. Completion of the online theory component is required before attending the practical training on 16 August. It takes approximately 6–8 hours in total and can be completed in smaller sessions at your own pace.
- How do I access the online theory course?
Once you register and pay, you will receive a link and login details for the online theory platform. You can complete it at any time before the practical session.
- Do I need to bring anything to the training?
Yes. Participants should bring note-taking materials, comfortable clothing suitable for practical outdoor components, and any personal items required for the day. You will also need to bring your own lunch and snacks. Tea and coffee will be provided. Further details will be sent prior to the session.
- Is this suitable for beginners?
Yes. The training is designed for beginners and those interested in becoming wildlife carers. No prior experience is required, but completion of the online theory is mandatory before the practical session.
- Can my child attend the practical training?
WNT have said they are happy for younger attendees to participate in the Introduction to Mammals workshop, subject to a few conditions:
A parent or guardian must complete the online prerequisite learning.
The parent or guardian must attend the face-to-face workshop alongside the young person.
The parent or guardian remains responsible for the young person's supervision and behaviour for the duration of the workshop.
The workshop is designed as an adult learning environment, so participants are expected to engage respectfully and not disrupt the learning experience for others.
As they're under 18, they won't be eligible to register as wildlife rehabilitators at this stage, but we hope the training provides a fantastic foundation should they choose to pursue rehabilitation in the future.
It's actually really encouraging to hear there are young people on Flinders with such an interest in wildlife. They're exactly the next generation we'd love to see inspired and involved, and hopefully this workshop will be a great opportunity for them to learn alongside their parents
