Landscape Features and Local Rocks is part of our summer ‘Introduction to Nature Series’.

Get an elevated view of the Missoula Valley and learn why the landscape looks the way it does. Faults, a glacial lake, and other momentous geological events have dramatically shaped our surroundings. We will also spend time looking at our most common local rocks; rocks that are 1.5 billion years old, rocks that form the Bitterroot mountains, smoky crystals, and more. For those who are interested in a strenuous climb, there is the option after the program to hike to the Glacial Lake Missoula lake elevation marker almost 1,000 ft. above the valley floor.

Moderate difficulty, incline. Optional hike to the elevation marker is strenuous.

Instructor: Christine Morris is the Community Programs Coordinator at the Montana Natural History Center. She teaches the Montana Master Naturalist and Certified Interpretive Guide courses. Christine loves geology and spends lots of her time picking up rocks.
