Description

Promo
This will be somewhat of a collaborative class. Please bring small, interesting scraps of fabric to share, and an item you'd like to repair —or, even better, one you'd simply like to decorate!

Longer description
This workshop will be a fun exploration of visible mending and I’ll show you some shashiko for inspiration (not my own!) A couple of the sample photos show a combo of fabric painting and stitching so feel free to explore Pinterest and come along with some partial preparation done ready to stitch alongside of others!

What you do need to bring:
1. An item you’d like to decorate or mend (visibly)
2. Any fun small scraps of fabric you’d like to use and/or contribute.
3. Additional threads (embroidery or thick cotton) would be welcome but there will be provisions available.

Limit of 10 participants

Bio
Heather McEwan is a maker working across clay, paint, words and meditative expression—which involves noticing, and plaiting thoughts into forms, and further, a quiet spiritual practice of plaiting Words of Life into her own life.

As mother, Daughter, daughter (not a typo) and friend, these ways of being - are not separate from her art work but shape its pace, attention and tangible results.

Her practice often begins with “ oh!!! I wonder what would happen if…?” and continues on through play, interruptions, adapting, and returning - building from mistakes, sometimes turning them into features. She works by doing: trying, failing, adapting, reconsidering , sometimes abandoning but usually keeping on going.

The “StudioShed” is a sanctuary where her experience of time shifts. Frustration sometimes visits, and is both a part of the process and a larger metaphor when her efforts feel too small to express all that’s in her heart.

Pallet knife and oil paint, acrylics, ink and pen, clay and glaze and words.
