INVERTEBLITZ by The Entomological Society of New Zealand
Event description
Join scientists and bug hunters plus community from the Entomological Society of New Zealand to explore the Avon Ōtākaro Forest Park in the red zone and uncover the critters who live there.
Teams of experts will be heading out before the sun sets to turn over logs and shake trees. After sundown the light traps will come out to attract any night flying creatures. All cool finds will be uploaded to iNaturalist NZ.
Our macro photographer will help you capture stunning photos of the bugs we encounter, just bring any equipment you have (could be your smartphone phone with a clip-on macro lens!).
Members of the Waitākiri EcoSanctuary Trust will be on hand to share their vision for the wider area. Green Lab will be installing their cunningly crafted wētā hotels into the forest park. Supported by the Christchurch City Council red zone rangers.
Bring sturdy shoes, warm jackets and a headtorch if you have one, as well as your camera and your sense of adventure.
Sausage sizzle and hot chocolate will be on offer, Meet at the Nature Play Area 4:30 pm.
