Irrigation Basics for Native Plants with Erik Blank — October 24, 2026
Description
California native plants are well-adapted to our climate, but even drought-tolerant gardens need thoughtful watering to establish and thrive. If you’re new to irrigation or looking for a clearer understanding of the basics, this outdoor walk-and-talk is a welcoming place to start.
Learn the fundamentals of watering native landscapes, including when to water, how much to apply, and how plants’ needs change over time. Participants will be introduced to common irrigation methods—including overhead, drip, and hand watering—and discuss the benefits, limitations, and best uses for each approach. This class is recommended as an introduction to both our Comprehensive Irrigation and Drip Irrigation classes.
Led by an experienced native plant educator, this class combines practical guidance with observation and discussion in the garden.
This walk-and-talk will be held outdoors in our demonstration gardens. Guests should wear closed-toe shoes, sun protection, and be prepared for up to one hour of walking on sloped and uneven surfaces. Water bottles are strongly recommended.
This class is part of Theodore Payne Foundation’s Native Garden Irrigation series. Students new to irrigation are encouraged to begin with Native Garden Irrigation: Basics Walk-and-Talk before enrolling in Comprehensive Practices or Focus on Drip Systems.
Erik Blank is a long-time California native plant enthusiast. He is Horticultural Educator & Garden Lead and an instructor of the California Native Plant Landscaper Certification for the Theodore Payne Foundation. Rain or Shine Policy
Our classes generally take place rain or shine. We do not cancel classes simply because rain is forecast; however, the safety of our students, instructors, and staff comes first. In the event of severe weather or unsafe conditions, we will evaluate the situation on a case-by-case basis and may modify, relocate, postpone, or cancel a class. If TPF cancels or postpones a class due to weather, registered participants will be notified as soon as possible and offered a refund or the option to transfer their registration to a rescheduled date when available.
