A little bit about the host and the 'why':
Hi I'm Mikaela Gower and when we were told we were expecting twins, it was a shock. Once we had the time to process the shock, the second shock came when we were trying to find accommodation in Adelaide to await the arrival of our boys, made harder by the fact that the weeks we needed to be there fell over the Summer School Holiday period including Christmas and New Year. It was safe to say were were looking at an up front cost of over $10,000 (pre-PATS refund) for up to 4.5 weeks of accommodation close to our birthing hospital - this included a move between accommodation providers within that period due to finding most accommodation providers were already booked up.
After we made the booking the hunt continued for another accommodation answer.
Enter: Cottages for Country Care.
After hours of research, doing the call arounds to anyone who might know of something else, we received a phone call asking if we had heard of the Cottages for Country Care.
What a gem!
A group of dedicated volunteers who run Cottages for Country Care - with the sole existence to assist in alleviating the emotional and financial pressures placed on country patients and their families when needing to travel and stay in Adelaide for medical care.
How incredibly fortunate we were to have found this wonderful organisation.
We were leaving our little home town, our larger support network and our amazing medical care team for somewhat of an expected time period to welcome our boys - a happy story, yet still a little bit scary. I can't help but imagine being faced with the task to find accommodation after a diagnosis that potentially resulted in a more uncertain circumstantial change like it does for so many. I'm so grateful knowing that Cottages for Country Care exist at times like this for those country patients in their greatest time of need.
Since our time staying in the cottage named 'Jane' we have come to learn of many other Eyre Peninsula families who have used the organisation for many different medical reasons.
Cottages 4 Country Care have 6 cottages that provide patients and their families, with accommodation and support that is close to major treatment centres, hygienic and in a low infection environment, fully furnished and self-contained.
This fundraiser is not just to raise funds for this incredible organisation - for them to continue to provide this incredible service, but to spread the word that they exist and they need help to continue doing what they do.
Please attend this event or reach out if you would like to be involved in a different way.
Looking forward to seeing you all on the night.
Many thanks, Mikaela
