Iwa Ji literally means Yam-cutting. It is a centuries-old Igbo tradition that has organically evolved in Igbo land of the southeastern Nigeria and is now celebrated annually by Igbos around the world.

Yam cutting is a symbolic act that represents success and bountiful farming harvest.

In contemporary times, the Igbo people have consolidated Iwa Ji into a unifying cultural festival; an occasion of thanksgiving, reflection, and communal celebration. It is a time to take stock of achievements, acknowledge outstanding contributions, offer prayers for future success, and enrich the community through vibrant cultural expressions, which is exactly what we have planned to deliver this year.

This year’s celebration will feature:

Iwa Ji by elders, titled men and women, alongside invited South Western Sydney state and local political leaders.
Traditional dances performed by both men and women.
A rich arts exhibition.
Igbo language presentations by children and young adults.
A variety of superbly prepared Igbo cuisines.
Igbo music curated by a seasoned DJ.
