    jalan jalan - to journey, to go sightseeing

    Join us at the State Library of WA on 20 and 21 April for a deep dive into contemporary Indonesian film and television.

    Program highlights include the multi-award-winning, anime-inspired feature, The Battle of Surabaya; the hilarious comedy-drama Onde Mande! (The Prize); the powerful environmental documentary Pulau Plastik; documentaries revealing Indonesia's Best Ever Destinations and Best Ever Eats, and the coming-of-age 'dramedy', Soulbeats. 

    Plus much, much more!

    An accompanying exhibition of Indonesian textiles alongside materials curated from the State Library collection to showcase Indonesia’s unique connection with WA will be on display in the theatre foyer during the weekend.

    • Screenings 10.00am-5.00pm daily, Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st April.
    • Admission is free but bookings are recommended.

    SATURDAY 20TH PROGRAM

    SESSION 1:  10.10am - 11.45am

    Sample the diversity of Indonesian culture and creativity in this selection of made-for-television dramas, documentaries and animation.

    • Cerita Wastra - Maumere
      A program that tells the story of the efforts being made to preserve traditional ikat weaving from Maumere on the Indonesian island of Flores.

    • Janji Cinta
      The charm and beauty of the Prajnaparamita statue, the 'Mona Lisa from Java', holds a million stories of love and hope for Raja and Gayatri. Separated by distance and time, will fate bring these two lovers back together?

    • Desa Timun, eps 1 & 3
      Desa Timun (Timun Village) brings wayang art - the art of shadow puppetry - to life through animation (aniwayang). In these episodes, follow the exciting adventures of Cila and Cili.

    • Soulbeats
      A cross-cultural coming-of-age dramedy in which a wide-eyed young woman finds herself walking a tightrope between the traditional cultural expectations of Bali’s Island of Gods and the hedonism of the world’s best party scene.

      This is a must-do culinary adventure with five of Southeast Asia's best-known foodies, an odyssey for your eyes and your taste buds as we visit five of Indonesia's best-kept secret locations and explore sensational local cuisine.

    SESSION 3:  1.35pm - 3.05pm

    Pulau Plastik (Plastic Island)
    A powerful and inspiring documentary that tells the story of three individuals and their fight against single-use plastic pollution. Gede Robi is the Balinese vocalist of grunge-band Navicula; Tiza Mafira, a young lawyer from Jakarta; and Prigi Arisandi, a biologist and river guard from East Java. Together they explore the extent of plastic pollution in Indonesia, how it has entered our food chain and is impacting our health, and what can be done to address the plastic pollution crisis.

    SESSION 4:  3.15pm - 5.10pm

    The Battle of Surabaya
    In this anime-influenced war drama, Musa, a brave thirteen-year-old shoe shiner, and his young friend Yumna play a vital role in Indonesia's 1945 battle for independence against colonial forces.

    SESSION 2:  12.15 – 1.35pm

    Continue the Jalan Jalan journey into Indonesian culture and community with these made-for-television dramas.

    • Puja Maha Kawia
      A research trip to Gunung Kawi in 1907 uncovers a temple built to commemorate King Udayana and his two sons, King Marakata & Anak Wungsu.
      23 min drama; Indonesian with English subtitles.
    • Uma dan Tattoo Warisan Suku Mentawai (Uma and Mentawai Tribal Heritage Tattoos) 
      This documentary reveals the Mentawai lifestyle and traditions that have been passed down from ancestors thousands of years ago. The Mentawai mark themselves with tattoos as a symbol of natural balance with the environment. It is considered to be one of the oldest tattoo methods in the world.

    SESSION 3:  1.45-3.25pm

    More drama, comedy and romance from Indonesiana TV.

    • Kado Istimewa
      A short film commemorating Indonesian Museum Day and the 7th Anniversary of the Indonesian Presidential Museum Balai Kirti.
      25 min drama-comedy-romance; Indonesian with English subtitles. 
    • Cinta di Batas Negara
      Loyalty inspires sacrifices and tests an individual's steadfastness in their promises. With the passing of time, will these promises be kept?
      49 min romance-drama; Indonesian with English subtitles.
    • Apung Pelaut di Bahari
      The Sea Tribe are an ethnic group inhabiting the Riau Islands. In the past they have guarded the straits, repelled pirates, and guided traders to the ports of the Kingdoms. How do they live, most of their lives are in the sea?
      12 mins, documentary;

    SESSION 4:  3.35-5.15pm

    Onde Mande! (The Prize)
    Angku Wan, a retired teacher living on the edge of Lake Maninjau in West Sumatra wins a major raffle prize worth 2 billion from a soap company. With those billions, Angku Wan intends to build a village for the common good. Complications arise when Angku Wan passes away and the villagers must work together to secure the prize.
