Business Engagement at Queen's will host 'The Day the Health Service Stopped: Reflections and Future Strategies' given by James Carroll, Deputy Chief Technology Officer, Health Service Executive Ireland (HSE), on Thursday 8 May from 5.30pm - 7.10pm at Riddel Hall, 185 Stranmillis Road, Belfast, BT9 5EE.

In 2021, the Irish Health Service Executive faced a nationwide cyber-attack, which has led to ongoing threats against the Health Service.

James will provide an in-depth analysis of the complexities of a cyber incident, presenting a range of approaches and strategies that leaders can implement to mitigate their impact. Resilience during and after a cyber incident is crucial for the continued operation of any organisation, as attackers exploit vulnerabilities. By examining the motivations and methods of attackers, James will guide you through the experience of dealing with nation-sponsored actors, insider sabotage, and the challenges encountered by businesses and law enforcement in tracking and apprehending perpetrators.

By the end of this session, you will gain a deeper understanding of the true nature of your role and its critical importance in safeguarding your organisation.

About James Carroll

James Carroll is the Deputy Chief Technology Officer, Health Service Executive Ireland.  James has over 30 years of experience in technology and holds responsibility for the strategy of systems, platforms and critical infrastructure across the health system that support the running of the health service. James has a particular interest in developing technology standards that will support better clinician productivity and experience, leading to better patient outcomes. James was also a key member in the response to the cyber-attack on the health service in 2021.  Prior to joining the HSE, James has held a number of senior roles in various multinational technology organisations.  In his spare time, James has a passion for Formula One and water sports.
