You are invited to John Curtin Gallery's first Makuru season Lunchtime Talk, with award-winning participatory visual artist, human rights researcher and 2025 Forrest Foundation Creative Fellow, Lauri Parr.

Kimberley communities draw inspiration from James Tylor

In June 2025, children and community from very remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Kimberley communities, reflected on James Tylor’s collection with 'Our World in Photos', a photovoice project housed at Curtin’s School of Population Health. Inspired by James’ merging of photographic processes, participants engaged in a series of photography, paint and cyanotypes workshops to explore culture and country. Lauri will discuss this project and its relationship to James Tylor’s exhibition now showing at the JCG.

Project Facilitator, Lauri Parr, shares these community reflections, exploring the ongoing significance of James’ work in challenging the colonialism that photography often implicitly expresses as truth.

Light refreshments provided.

The JCG Lunchtime Talks is a mid-week series that invites speakers from diverse disciplines to share their research, practices, and perspectives in response to the gallery’s exhibition programming. These informal sessions offer a welcoming, collegial space to explore ideas, spark dialogue, and engage with the themes and questions shaping contemporary visual culture and artistic practice.
