Event description

Japanese Sashiko Workshop for Beginners – 2 Hours

Discover the beauty and rhythm of Sashiko, a centuries-old Japanese embroidery technique known for its elegant white-on-indigo patterns and meditative stitching. Originally developed to reinforce and mend clothing, Sashiko has evolved into a beloved decorative art form that brings texture, meaning, and timeless charm to handmade creations.

Whether you’re completely new to stitching or just curious, this beginner-friendly workshop offers a gentle and inspiring introduction to the world of Sashiko. No advanced skills or special tools required—just a desire to slow down, stitch mindfully, and enjoy the process.

We’re thrilled to welcome back our guest instructor Yoshiko Ito, who previously led the popular Japanese Tsumami Zaiku workshop.

Yoshiko Ito, Bachelor of Fine Arts, is a Sydney-based visual artist from Japan known for blending traditional Japanese crafts with modern techniques to create culturally rich and unique works of art.

What You’ll Learn:

  • A brief history of Sashiko and its cultural origins
  • Overview of essential tools and materials
  • Introduction to common Sashiko patterns, their meanings, and how to transfer them to fabric
  • Basic stitching technique – Unshin (how to hold and move the needle smoothly)
  • Hands-on practice creating simple Sashiko swatches to take home

All materials provided. Suitable for both adult and kids (Ages 8+).
