Event description

Thursday Gig night – starts with Big Band Extravaganza

A Jazz Gala, featuring an all-star line-up of current students and professional tutors from Hamilton Boys’ High School, is set to lift the Cambridge Town Hall roof off – at 7pm on Thursday 4 July.

The evening features an 18-piece jazz orchestra and award-winning jazz combo performing hits from Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darrin, Chet Baker and more.

Special guests include Ben Gilgen, considered one of New Zealand’s finest jazz pianists and 2022 NZ Musician of the Year, and up and coming singer, Kaelan Haggie with tunes such as I’ve Got you Under My Skin, Mack the Knife, Blue Skies, With a Song in My Heart and more.

The jazz orchestra will be conducted by Paul Norman (University of Waikato), who hails from the Roger Fox Big Band amongst other prominent collaborations.

Not just any old school band, this group is considered one of New Zealand’s top bands. Their success has led to their upcoming US tour this September, with concerts through Los Angeles and San Diego.

The concert is a collaboration between the Cambridge Town Hall, Paul Norman and the Hamilton Boys Big Band, in support of their upcoming US tour in September of 2024.
