Event description

The seventh concert in our series is a new suite of music by Tāmaki Makaurau composer, performer, and educator; Callum Passells.

For the Jazz Orchestra Composer Series Callum brings new music for his ensemble LCR, an ensemble which features three identical saxophone trios (sax, bass, and drums) that play with and against each other in a kaleidoscopic and often explosive fashion. The new pieces commissioned for this series continue to stretch at the fabric of jazz and improvised forms, and are inspired by Morton Feldman, Lennie Tristano, Henry Threadgill and Sly Stone.

Callum has been deeply involved in the New Zealand jazz and improvised music scene for over a decade, and is a busy freelancer in the wider music community in Auckland. He has performed with Aldous Harding, Hans Pucket, the Exploding Rainbow Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, among many others. In 2021, Callum was commissioned to compose a large-scale work 'Solid Spirit, Liquid Body' for the Wellington Jazz Festival. He is currently completing a Master of Music degree at the University of Auckland, where he also teaches saxophone.

The Jazz Orchestra Composer Series showcases original music for large jazz ensemble by New Zealand composers. Concerts take place every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, from May to October, from 7pm. Tickets are $15, door sales $20.
