Event description

The fourth concert in our concert series is the esteemed pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and jazz educator Daniel Hayles. He presents a brand new project, On The Grid, explores the marking, passing and embellishing of time.

The Grid is life, time, tone, tonality, rhythm, gravity, momentum, and style. The musicians work at times together, other times separately as 3 ensembles (horn quintet, string quartet, piano trio), and other times as combinations amongst themselves. The music covers a selection of different styles and feels within and outside the jazz sound.

Daniel is a jazz- and groove-centric musician from New Plymouth, and holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in jazz piano (PGDipMus) from the New Zealand School Of Music. Daniel's first album, Eldest Of Five, was released in September of 2019, and his second album Other Futures was released March 4th of 2022. Daniel currently performs with such wide-ranging and prominent acts as Lord Echo, Hollie Smith (including on her number one albums Water Or Gold and Coming In From The Dark), as well as many local bands and artists.

The Jazz Orchestra Composer Series showcases original music for large jazz ensemble by New Zealand composers. Concerts take place every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, from May to October, from 7pm. Tickets are $15, door sales $20.
