Jazz Session: Shanghai Jazz | Chinese melodies with Jazz
Description
Chinese melodies. Jazz spirit. Shanghai after dark.
In 1930s Shanghai, jazz orchestras filled the city’s dance halls while a new Chinese popular music took shape on records and radio. Songwriters and performers brought the melodic contours of Chinese folk and traditional music into conversation with American swing and big-band jazz, creating a sound shaped by two cultures and unmistakably its own.
On 16 October, Acidity brings that musical encounter into the present with classic Shanghai jazz alongside beloved Chinese pop and folk songs from the 1930s to later decades. We keep the familiar melodies and their original character, then open them up through jazz reharmonisation and improvisation.
Let the music take you back to an era when Chinese and Western cultures met in the sound of Shanghai.
