“Remembering Bill Evans”
with Louise Denson (Piano)
+ Hamish Houston (Bass)
+ Ted Vining (Drums)
Bill Evans is arguably the most influential jazz pianist to have emerged in the second half of the 20th century, with generations of musicians seeking to imitate his unique and immediately identifiable style. Lyrical melody, rhythmic sophistication, harmonic richness, emotional depth and beauty characterise his unparalleled musicianship.
In this special performance, Louise Denson (piano) Hamish Houston (bass) and Ted Vining [drums] will pay tribute to Bill Evans’ compositional legacy, interpreting such classics as Waltz for Debby, Time Remembered, Sometime Ago, Blue in Green and Nardis. The program will also include standards associated with Evans, and compositions by Louise which have been inspired by his artistry.
Ted Vining needs no introduction to Australian jazz audiences, having performed, recorded, toured and collaborated with a who’s-who of national and international artists over more than 50 years. His assertive, hard-swinging style combines with subtlety and spontaneity in performances that never fail to surprise and delight listeners.
Louise Denson is an accomplished pianist, improvisor and composer. Canadian by birth, she fulfilled key roles in jazz studies and artistic research at the Queensland Conservatorium during a 20-year tenure, before relocating to Hobart in 2021. She has performed at national and international festivals and events, including the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, Montreal International Jazz Festival, Wimbledon International Music Festival, Melbourne International Women’s Jazz Festival, and others. Her latest CD, Nova Nova, (2021) received a 4-star review in the Weekend Australian.
Hamish Houston is much esteemed by his colleagues and admired by Tasmanian audiences for his multi-genre musicianship. His solid grooves are complemented by creative, melodic solos and a solid commitment to always making the music happen, right here, right now.
This will be a night you won’t want to miss! See you there….
