In recent years Jenna Cave has found herself drawn to writing songs as a powerful means to explore, express and move through her emotional experiences in a period of deep grief and healing. Following on from her 2024 sextet album “Grief, Hope, Love” featuring vocalist Kristin Berardi, Cave returned to her own vocal practice and formed Heart Songs as her new performance vehicle. At 8 O’Clock Sharp this new quartet iteration will perform brand new and recent songs, traversing themes of grief and loss, self-compassion and healing, love and heartbreak and motherhood; in contemporary jazz, soul and bluesy settings.

Jenna Cave (b.1984) is an Australian composer, arranger, bandleader, saxophonist and vocalist. Cave completed a BMus (jazz) with first class Honours at the Australian National University (2006) specializing in jazz arranging and composition, and a Master of Music (composition) at the Sydney Conservatorium (2010) receiving academic prizes and scholarships at both institutions. She directed the 19-piece Divergence Jazz Orchestra in Sydney as resident composer and arranger from 2012 to 2023, releasing three critically acclaimed albums as leader: Shadows and Light (2023), Fake it Until You Make It (2016) and The Opening Statement (2013). In 2024 she released her sextet album, Grief, Hope, Love; a suite of 6 songs featuring acclaimed Australian vocalist Kristin Berardi. The album was commissioned and produced by ABC Jazz.

In addition to ABC Jazz, Cave’s notable commissions have included Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Australian National University, Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival,  Nadje Noordhuis, Paul Cutlan, WA Youth Jazz Orchestra and Siren’s Big Band. 

At this performance Cave will release her new single 42 Again (Live at Johnston Street Jazz).
