The Biblical and Early Christian Studies Program in ACU's Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry warmly welcomes you to join us for a public lecture offered by Professor Jodi Magness from the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prof. Magness is one of the world's leading biblical archaeologists, with expertise in the history and archaeology of Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian territories during the Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods. She has published widely, including multiple award-winning books and dozens of articles, and has participated in over 20 excavations in Israel and Greece, co-directing excavations at the Roman siege works at Masada in 1995 and directing excavations at Huqoq in Galilee since 2011. For her public lecture at ACU, Prof. Magness will share insights from her most recent book, Jerusalem Through the Ages: From Its Beginnings to the Crusades (Oxford University Press, 2024), surveying the history and archaeology of Jerusalem in the Late Second Temple period (late first century BCE – first century CE) up to the city’s destruction by the Romans in 70 CE. She will focus especially on the reign of Herod the Great, his reconstruction of the Second Temple and Temple Mount, and on Jesus’s final days in Jerusalem.
Please note that it is free to attend, but registration is requested for catering purposes. Refreshments will be available from 18:00 and the lecture will begin at 18:30.
