Jewellery from Sublimation Printed Metal with Anna Davern

Sublimation printing is a very simple technique to transfer images onto sheet metal. In this class, Electronic files of images and photos will be printed and then transferred to a variety of flat media, including sheet metal and acrylic. This class is suitable for experienced makers as well as non-makers and a variety of techniques will be taught to then create items of jewellery from the printed material. A $50 material fee will be payable to the tutor on the day. Students will receive a pack of pre-cut metal shapes and a variety of images to print. Extra materials will be available to purchase (cost between $2 and $15 per piece).

Printing your own images

It will be possible for students to print their own images. The tutor will be able to assist with preparing your images to print, however, there will be less time pressure on the tutor's computer if you can bring your own laptop with any photo editing (photoshop) software installed. Gather electronic images of things you think you might want to print. This might be photos, old advertising prints, drawings, paintings, abstract patterns, etc. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Think colour! We will print at 300dpi so if your image has a lower resolution than that, it will become scaled down so try and source and save your images as large as possible. Images can be scaled down but not scaled up without losing quality

Tutor Profile

Anna Davern gained her undergraduate degree in Jewellery and Object Design at Sydney College of the arts and her post graduate studies and subsequent Masters degree were completed at RMIT.

In 20 years of practice, Anna has held three solo exhibitions at Craft Victoria and has been represented in numerous Australian and international solo and group exhibitions including a recent survey of Australian art at the Museum Of Contemporary Art, Taipei. In 2011 she co-founded Northcity4, an ARI that provides professional and creative opportunities to the Australian contemporary jewellery community.

Anna has been the recipient of grants from the Australia Council, Arts Victoria and NAVA and she was awarded the Chairman’s Prize for Innovation in the Victorian Craft Awards, 2017. In 2007 she undertook a residency at the Estonian Academy of Art. Anna has taught and lectured at universities and TAFEs in Australia and at the Estonian Academy of Art.

Anna Davern’s practice straddles the visual arts, jewellery, fashion and education. She teaches, writes, curates and primarily makes jewellery and objects from the Northcity4 studios in Brunswick, Melbourne. Anna is a well-respected artist within the Australian contemporary jewellery and craft communities.

Getting to Northcity4

Northcity4 is located at 61 Weston St, Brunswick. Workshop entrance is via the side path on the Eastern side of the building. Northcity4 is easily accessible via public transport; the #1, #8 & #19 trams stop nearby and we are close to Jewel station on the Upfield line. There is ample bike parking out the front. Car parking on the street is limited and timed but the Barkly Square carpark is just across the road.

Northcity4 is a working studio in an old factory in Brunswick. It has a concrete floor and heavy machinery and equipment in the space. It can be cold in winter (we have some heating!) and hot in summer so please dress appropriately.

Please wear covered shoes and be prepared to tie long hair back. Please bring a notebook, pen and your imagination!

Terms and Conditions

Our courses are suitable for students who are 16 years or older, unless specified in the class description. Some of our courses require prior learning, please check the course description thoroughly before enrolling.

Cancellations

Northcity4 reserves the right to cancel any scheduled course. Of course, we don’t want to do this but in the case of tutor illness or the class not reaching a minimum number of enrolments, students will be notified two days before the scheduled start date and refunds will be provided.

Unfortunately we are unable to offer refunds if you are unable to attend your course. If you want to transfer to a course at a later date, we require you to give us at least four working days’ notice prior to the start date of your course. No transfers or credit notes will be issued for withdrawals when less than four working days' notice is given.
