JIMPA Screening & Fundraiser for Trans Justice Project

Join us for a special screening of JIMPA at the Impact Story Lab.

Told with empathy, humour, compassion, and joy, Jimpa celebrates the unique loves and challenges of a modern queer family across three generations. 

Following the film, we will have a panel conversation with local advocates including Jackie Turner of Trans Justice Project and Em Scott from Rainbow Giving, PLUS virtual Q&A with Jimpa actors Olivia Colman, Kate Box, Aud Mason-Hyde and filmmaker Sophie Hyde.

Date: Wednesday 13th May, 2026

Time: 5pm start for community dinner, 6:15pm film starts, followed by conversation and live virtual Q&A with filmmaker.

Where: Gadigal Land. Impact Story Lab - Level 2, 101-111 William Street, Darlinghurst NSW.

Accessibility: The venue has stair-free access (lifts) to the second floor. It's a 10-15min walk from Town Hall or Kings Cross station. Metered street parking is available.

Suggested dress code: queer joy / rainbow / come as you are.

Why come along?

You're invited to join us for a joyful night of queer film, community and celebration. There are lots of dark and troubling things happening in the world right now. Trans rights are under attack in many places, including here in Australia. Let's come together in the spirit of community to celebrate unique queer stories through film and conversation.

There will also be an invitation to share your own stories via the film's impact project - The Queerest Parts of Us, a digital quilt collecting personal images and stories from the wider community of people like us who have come together because of this beautiful film.

From acclaimed director Sophie Hyde (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), JIMPA is an uplifting multi-generational family story starring award-winning favourites Olivia Colman & John Lithgow.

Hannah (Colman) takes her trans nonbinary teenager Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde) to Amsterdam to visit their gay grandfather, lovingly known as “Jimpa” (Lithgow). When Frances expresses a desire to stay with Jimpa for a year abroad, Hannah is forced to reconsider her parenting beliefs and the stories she has long told about her family. As Jimpa faces the difficulties of aging as a gay man in a generation that never expected to grow old and Frances grapples with the disappointment of heroes falling short of their ideals, Hannah learns to navigate the differing perspectives of her father and her child.

This film screening of JIMPA is a fundraiser for Trans Justice Project, Australia’s first trans-led, national campaigning organisation.

Their mission is to build a powerful, trans-led movement fighting for freedom, justice, and equality for all trans and gender diverse people.

Trans Justice Project works together with our communities, loved ones, and allies to bring about a future where all trans people are safe, celebrated, and free.

This is a volunteer-run community event, supported by Impact Story Lab Sydney.

Community screenings of Jimpa's have been enabled by the film's Impact Producers, The Unquiet Collective, who are committed to transformative change via impact campaigns that connect stories with audiences and audiences with opportunities to create change.
