Event description

Hares & Hyenas with Australian Queer Archives presents a conversation with lesbian icon Joan Nestle at the Victoria Pride Centre Theatrette at 7 pm on 14 February, to celebrate the publication of Joan’s latest collection, "A Sturdy Yes of a People: Selected Writings by Joan Nestle.”

After coming out into the dyke bar culture of the late 1950s, the working-class Jewish Nestle has written extensively on lesbian life, culture, sex and identity for over 50 years in books such as the pioneering “Persistent Desire: A Femme-Butch Reader," and “A Restricted Country”, as well as founding the Lesbian Herstory Archives in New York.

Joan will be speaking with Roz Bellamy and Carolyn D’Cruz. Roz is the Editor in Chief of Archer Magazine and their debut memoir, "Mood", which explores the intersection of identity and mental illness, is forthcoming with Wakefield Press in mid-2023.  Carolyn is a senior lecturer in Gender Sexuality and Diversity Studies at La Trobe University. She is the author of "Identity Politics in Deconstruction: Calculating with the Incalculable" and "Democracy in Difference: Debating key terms in gender, sexuality, race and identity".
