Event description

The Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award was established in 2011 in honour of Sutherland and Bonynge to help provide scholarships and study grants for our most talented emerging young opera singers while promoting the art of bel canto singing made famous by Dame Joan Sutherland OM AC CBE. This prestigious competition is open to singers aged 20-30 and carries with it a first prize of $30,000 including a place in the Solti Accademia di Bel Canto in Italy for 2023. Six singers will compete for a total of $65,000 in prize money which will be judged by Richard Bonynge AC CBE, Bernadette Cullen, Patricia Price and Fiona Janes. Accompanied by Bradley Gilchrist, each singer will perform two operatic arias.

The Sydney International Song Prize is now in it's third year. Its aim is to encourage the performance and study of Art Song. Three singers and their pianists will each present a 20 minute recital programme of art songs in the first half of the afternoon. After interval the Bel Canto Award singers will present their two arias. The prize winners for both competitions will be presented at the conclusion of the afternoon.

The Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Foundation is proud to support these fine young artists in their pursuit of excellence in the field of opera and classical music.

We invite you to come along and enjoy this glorious afternoon of music making and to take part by voting for your favourite singer for the Audience Prize.
