John Grenell Family Tribute Show
Event description
The JOHN GRENELL FAMILY TRIBUTE SHOW returns!
The children of legendary country singer John Hore Grenell come together to celebrate the life and music of ‘New Zealand’s Country Gentleman’.
A household name in the ‘60s and ‘70s, John was a best-selling and award-winning artist with 17 albums and many singles to his name, outselling the Beatles in this country, and his soundtrack 'Welcome to our World' played for the Toyota commercial for over 10 years.
Gathering for John’s funeral in 2022, the Grenells arranged a Memorial Concert to honour John and his music. They played together in the James Hay Theatre in Christchurch to an audience of thousands, both in the theatre and watching the online livestream. Many of the audience sent heartfelt compliments, expressing hopes of future appearances. Despite the geographical division of the siblings, this tribute show has now arrived.
Denver, Oakley, Redford and Amiria grew up with music in the air on the family farm, where their parents ran the Whitecliffs Music Festivals from 1982 to 1995. All genres of music and workshops inspired the young Grenells to pick up instruments and form their own groups. Over the years these have included Shapeshifter, Bunyip, the Ōtautahi Allstars, The Swan Sisters and as well-regarded solo artists in their own right, with a collection of NZ Music Awards and nominations among them.
With Denver on bass, Oakley on guitar and vocals, Redford on drums and Amiria on guitar and vocals, the Grenells will deliver a set of well-known songs from John’s extensive repertoire including ‘Welcome to My World,’ ‘Blue Smoke,’ ‘Streets of Laredo’ and other songs the family performed with John over the years.
Audience comments 2022: "A beautiful and very memorable concert. Long may the legendary Grenell family music live on. Treasured memories of wonderful music from the heart.”
