Monthly gathering: Dive into Deep Ecology with John Seed from Rainforest Information Centre

This month our guest speaker will be John Seed, a longtime environmental activist who has been involved with permaculture since the 1980’s.

DEEP ECOLOGY proposes that underlying all of the symptoms of the environmental crisis is the illusion of separation between humans and the rest of the natural world.

The work is based on the principle that we will not solve the systemic environmental crises of our time unless we heal ourselves from the myth of separation from nature and reconnect at a visceral level to the web of life.

More about John:

He participated in the direct actions that saved the best of NSW sub-tropical rainforests (1979-81), Tasmanian temperate rainforests (1982-83) and Queensland’s tropical rainforests (1985-86).

In 1981 he started the Rainforest Information Centre and has worked to protect rainforests from PNG to Ecuador, Solomon Islands to India. He continues both his Australian and overseas forests work as well as facilitating experiential deep ecology workshops which sweep away the caught-in-the-headlights paralysis and empower people to engage effectively to stop our slide to oblivion.

He organised and participated in a couple of PDC’s with Geoff Lawton (see Geoff’s 7-minute video about John’s work here).

From 1981, when it became clear that wherever in the developing world rainforest destruction was taking place, unsustainable agriculture was always one of the drivers, John started teaching a day of deep ecology as part of Lea Harrison’s N NSW PDC’s and in exchange one or two of the Rainforest Information Centre’s volunteers would get a free place inn the workshop before going to India, Ecuador, PNG, Solomon Islands etc on their rainforest conservation projects. One of Lea’s students was Robin Clayfield who has been including deep ecology in her teaching ever since. Earlier this year Robin co-facilitated a deep ecology immersion weekend with John at Crystal Waters.
