Join the fight for licensing of the interior design profession.

In a significant step towards advancing the recognition and regulation of the interior design profession in Australia, the Design Institute of Australia met with officials from the New South Wales Department of Fair Trading last week to discuss requirements to achieve licensing for interior designers.

The DIA has been given two weeks to make a case for licensing of interior designers under the NSW regime. Our most persuasive argument will be made where evidence can be provided of interior designers reducing consumer risk.

Why is this important?

Licensing is an appropriate recognition of qualified interior designers' skills and expertise. If licensing doesn’t happen, it is our prediction that the interior design profession will disappear under the category of building designers who are already licensed. For the sake of our profession, we believe interior designers should be recognised and registered as a separate class of design practitioners.

What is the purpose of this meeting?

To update interior designers on the process undertaken so far and what needs to happen next.
To collect examples of times when interior designers have saved the day e.g., by specifying correct products / materials.

The DIA continues to advocate for the recognition and regulation of interior design, ensuring the profession's growth and the protection of both practitioners and consumers.

As part of the DIA’s Accredited Designer program, we offer Continuing Professional Development (CPD) through our learning resources. CPD is most effective if undertaken continuously to ensure a currency of skills and knowledge. Attendance at this event is worth 2CPD points.
