Journal Club Meeting – Sports-Related Brain Injuries and Children's Mental Health
Event description
Presenter: Jennifer Taylor
Journal Club Meeting – Sports-related brain injuries and Children's Mental health The meeting will feature a critical discussion of recent research on concussions, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and their long-term impacts on the mental health of young athletes. With a particular focus on youth football, we will examine if repetitive head injuries may contribute to self-harming behaviors and an increased risk of suicide. Special attention will be paid to the developmental vulnerability of children and adolescents, and how these injuries may affect both brain function and mental health outcomes over time.
1. Examine and analyze the research on the potential relationship between concussions, CTE, and the development of mental health issues, including self-injury and suicide, in youth athletes.
2. Utilize the information in peer-reviewed journal articles to apply the research on brain injuries in sports to current social work practice in micro, mezzo and macro settings.
3. Through structured discussion, contrast and compare data and implications from the literature on brain injury prevention and trauma-informed care into a plan for your own clinical practice.
