Jubilee Community Dinner: 25 Years of Fighting for Justice

Welcome to our second Jubilee Community Dinner! 

This year, Jubilee Australia celebrates 25 years of standing alongside communities across Australia and the Pacific fighting for justice. 

For the past 25 years, we have been working towards a fairer future where a healthy planet, empowered communities and just economies go hand in hand. We have created lasting change through investigative research, advocacy, partnership and the power of collective action. We grew out of an international movement rooted in the principle of global economic justice and continue to push for stronger corporate accountability, elevate the voices of communities impacted by extractive industries and defend the rights of people and planet over profit.  

Our impact wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing partners. We are especially thankful to our two amazing keynote speakers who will join us for this special evening:  Antonia Burke, a Yanyuwa/Garrwa woman from the Tiwi Islands and Executive Director of Sea of Nations, and Eddie Tanago, environmental defender and ACT NOW! Campaign Manager (learn more about them and their incredible work in the speaker profiles below.) 

Join us for a special community dinner to celebrate 25 years of impact, share stories from the journey so far, and toast to what's next.  

Delicious Tongan and Pacific Islander soul food will be prepared by Lu Run, there will be live music by Errol H Renaud & Band Caribbean Soul, a charity auction and the chance to win fantastic raffle prize(s)!

• Balmain Town Hall; Rear of/370 Darling St, Balmain NSW.

• Balmain Town Hall doesn't have a carpark, and street parking is limited in the area. There is public transport close to the venue.  

• Guests will be seated in tables of 10.

Music:

Errol H. Renaud, a musician, entertainer and composer from Trinidad & Tobago, is a pioneer of Caribbean music in Australia, Asia and the Pacific. He has performed in more than twenty-five countries worldwide, including the Caribbean, Australia, Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, touring mainly with his own bands.

Errol Renaud & Band Caribbean Soul is a versatile 4- to 7-piece band performing a fusion of grooves, sounds and styles, featuring steelpan, reggae shanks, soca riddims and a touch of dancehall.

Keynote speakers:  

Antonia Burke 

Antonia Burke is the Executive Director of Sea of Nations. A Yanyuwa/Garrwa woman who grew up on the Tiwi Islands, Antonia is a recognised leader in human rights, sea protection, and community advocacy.

With over 30 years of experience in corporate finance, business management, business start-ups, and research analysis, Antonia has worked extensively with communities to design and implement programs that are community-controlled, autonomous, and sustainable. Her leadership bridges cultural, environmental, and political spheres, shaping pathways where human rights, community strength, and protection of Sea Country are inseparable.

Eddie Tanago 

Eddie Tanago is the Campaign Manager at ACT NOW!, an independent advocacy organisation that campaigns for “Gutpela Sindaun Bilong Olgeta (A just, fair and equitable society). The three main campaigns include: (1) Promoting, Protecting and Celebrating Customary Land, (2) Stopping the Corruption, (3) Model of Development.

Initially from Oro Province in Papua New Guinea, Eddie has 18 years' experience working from community level up to the national level advocating for more transparency and accountability in government, human rights, issues relating to natural resource development, and the protection of customary land rights. He has a deep understanding of the political economy of PNG and is deeply embedded in civil society networks. 

Menu:

Dinner will be Tongan and Pacific Islander soul food prepared by Lu Run. Please inform us of any dietary requirements when you book your ticket. The menu options include: 

Entree 

Standard: Salmon Ota Ika (GF, NF) 

• Fresh salmon marinated in cream, citrus and mixed vegetables, a cherished Tongan favourite. 

Vegetarian: Vegetarian Ota Ika (V, VG, GF, NF) 

• Fresh vegetables marinated in cream and citrus, inspired by fresh flavours of the Pacific. 

Main Course 

Standard: Lu Pulu Salted Beef (GF, DF, NF) 

• Traditional Tongan-style salted beef wrapped in taro leaves and slow cooked in coconut cream. 

Vegetarian: Lu Palusami (V, VG, GF, DF, NF) 

• Taro leaves baked in rich coconut cream with sweet onion filling. 

Accompaniments: 

Cassava (V, VG, GF, DF, NF) 

• Steamed cassava, a traditional Pacific Island root vegetable, a comforting staple. 

Leafy Green Salad (V, VG, GF, DF, NF) 

• A selection of seasonal greens and vegetables, lightly dressed with lemon & vinegar. 

Dessert 

Banoffee Pie Cups (GF, DF, NF) 

• Layers of banana, caramel and coconut cream, served in individual cups for a sweet & indulgent finish  

Drinks 

A selection of soft drinks and wines will be provided. If you have a specific preference, please feel free to BYO.
