Event description

In partnership with the Helpmann Academy, the Adelaide Festival are providing a free masterclass for emerging Dance & Drama artists with UK-based dance theatre company Lost Dog. Lost Dog create work that ‘mixes from from theatre, dance, comedy, circus and storytelling in a way no other company does’ and are in Adelaide to perform their acclaimed work Juliet & Romeo.

Lost Dog, founded in 2004 by Ben Duke and Raquel Meseguer, have created and toured 10 full length shows; undertaken commissions across the UK; run more than 100 participatory workshops; and hosted micro-residencies and mentoring sessions. In talking about the company, Ben says: “The name came from the idea of a mongrel. The mongrel is a dog who has lost track of its heritage. It is not a pure breed, or even a cross breed it is its own thing, made up of bits of God knows what. We wanted to make mongrel work.”

In this masterclass participants will work with Solène Weinacther & Kip Johnson – performers in Juliet & Romeo. Solène joined Lost Dog and collaborated on the creation of Juliet & Romeo. Solène won the 2019 National Dance Award for Outstanding Female Modern Performance in her role as Juliet. Solène is a founding member of Collective Endeavours, a Glasgow-based music and dance collective that performs improvised pieces in non-conventional spaces in the UK and abroad. After graduating from Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2009, Kip Johnson has gone onto perform with dance theatre companies such as Protein dance, Vincent dance theatre, Gecko, Ultima Vez and Fevered Sleep. He has performed the role of Romeo since 2020.

Open to students and graduates of Helpmann Academy’s partner institutions.
