Abstract
As AI becomes embedded in nearly every business function, regulators, investors, and customers are demanding credible evidence that these systems actually perform as claimed, yet frameworks like ISO/IEC 42001 certify management systems without providing assurance over individual AI systems. This session explains what technical AI assurance is in plain terms, how it borrows the established practitioner/responsible-party/intended-user model from financial audit (including ISAE 3000-style reasonable and limited assurance), and how a real engagement is actually conducted, from selecting a normative framework and applicable criteria through evidence-gathering procedures such as inspection, inquiry, reperformance, and analytical testing. Worked examples, including NYC Local Law 144 bias audits, LLM testing against the NIST AI RMF Generative AI Profile, and EU AI Act risk-management engagements, ground the concepts in concrete practice.

Shea Brown, CEO at Babl AI
Dr. Shea Brown is the Founder and CEO of BABL AI, a leading research and consulting firm dedicated to advancing trustworthy, responsible, and ethical artificial intelligence. His research and professional work focus on algorithm auditing, AI assurance, AI governance, and identifying and mitigating bias in machine learning systems. A recognized thought leader in the emerging profession of AI auditing, Shea has advised organizations, regulators, and policymakers on responsible AI practices and has contributed to policy and regulatory discussions in both the United States and the European Union. As a For Humanity Fellow and Certified Auditor, he helps develop standards and frameworks for the governance and independent auditing of AI systems. He is also a founding member of the International Association of Algorithmic Auditors, a global community advancing the auditing profession, promoting best practices, and supporting the development of trustworthy AI. Alongside his industry work, Shea serves as an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Iowa, where he has received recognition from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences for excellence in teaching. His academic background includes a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Minnesota, providing a strong foundation in scientific rigour, quantitative analysis, and emerging technologies.
