June Film Club - Riot (2018)
Event description
As part of our Author Talk and coincide with the anniversary of Mardi Gras, we would like to invite to join us and celebrate it with the film "Riot".
In 1978, faced with the stagnation of efforts to decriminalise homosexuality, a determined group of activists takes it upon themselves to make a final stand and embrace their true identities. Under the leadership of Lance Gowland, a former union leader, they secure a police permit and spread the message far and wide. Despite the bitter winter cold, they don vibrant costumes, join hands, and march down Oxford Street. Unbeknownst to them, a resentful police force lies in ambush, but the bravery they exhibit that night becomes a catalyst for nationwide mobilisation.
