Following the livestream of this new release film, film club host Morag Gamble will be joined by the filmmaker, Helena Norberg-Hodge, for a discussion and Q&A exploring the quiet revolution that is emerging across the world.

Our screening is just one day after the film's release. We are thrilled to be screening this film as part of our monthly Permaculture Film Club and collaborating with Local Futures to celebrate the World Localization Day throughout June.

ABOUT THE HOST MORAG GAMBLE

Morag Gamble is the founder of the Permaculture Education Institute teaching permaculture educators on 6 continents. She has lived for a quarter of a century in an award-winning ecovillage and has taught at leading ecological learning centres such as Schumacher College where she met Helena, and subsequently volunteered with her in Ladakh in 1992 and 1995 - a huge inspiration and foundation for diving so deeply into permaculture. Morag's courses and programs always connect to Helena's relocalisation and counter-development work. She is also the creator of the Sense-Making in a Changing World Podcast, and the Our Permaculture Life BLOG and YouTube collectively viewed over 10 million times. Morag also hosts the Ethos Fellowship - a 12 month youth leadership program, Ethos Foundation - a registered charity offering free permaculture education for refugees, and mentors and hosts the award-winning global Permayouth.

ABOUT OUR GUEST: HELENA NORBERG-HODGE

HELENA NORBERG-HODGE, a pioneer of the new economy movement, is the founder and director of the international non-profit organisation, Local Futures, and the convenor of World Localization Day. She is author of the inspirational classic Ancient Futures, and Local is Our Future and producer of the award-winning documentary The Economics of Happiness. She is the founder of the International Alliance for Localisation, and a cofounder of the International Forum on Globalization and the Global Ecovillage Network. Helena is a recipient of the Alternative Nobel prize, the Arthur Morgan Award and the Goi Peace Prize for contributing to “the revitalization of cultural and biological diversity, and the strengthening of local communities and economies worldwide.”

ABOUT THE FILM

Planet Local – A Quiet Revolution is both a powerful critique of economic globalisation and a celebration of the kaleidoscope of grassroots initiatives that together form a growing movement for change: away from corporate rule towards the true democracy that more local markets make possible.

Away from the screens of the mainstream media, the crude ‘bigger is better’ narrative that has dominated economic thinking for centuries is being challenged. As people work to protect and restore their local economies, their communities and the natural world, countless diverse initiatives are demonstrating a new path forward for humanity. It’s a path that localises rather than globalises, connects rather than separates, and shows us that human beings need not be the problem – we can be the solution.

The film is built around edited presentations made for an event organised by Local Futures - World Localization Day - featuring prominent thinkers and activists from 6 continents, together with on-the-ground examples of localisation in action, the film highlights some key issues:

The disproportionate power and influence exerted by a handful of giant multinational corporations
The role of governments in supporting globalisation -- through taxes, subsidies and regulations
The madness of “redundant trade” that sees countries routinely importing and exporting identical quantities of identical products
The crucial connection between localisation and diversity
The role localisation can play in helping to rebuild community
The political changes needed to move from here to there
The “unstoppability” of localisation
