Disillusionment can be a heartless instructor. Death, separation, loss of job, sickness, jail, I've been through them all. Each disillusionment took from me another layer of mistaken identity into a pit of darkness. No longer a teacher, no longer an artist, no longer a spouse, a "good parent, a "likable guy" and then Covid hit us. Trusting nothing from my past and investing nothing in the future I found myself sitting squarely with myself. Yet I still existed.
Te Ao Maori had taught me that my identity lay in my mountain and with my ancestors. Maori say " I belong, therefore I am. René Descartes said " I think therefore I am. I entered what was for me a battle of titans as I questioned my identity and found my connection again.
A simple unwavering truth that is the same for all. "I am".
