Kai Hau Kai: Bring Something to the Table
Event description
What if you didn’t need money to get food? What if you could exchange your skill instead? We’re inviting people to join us for a ‘free feed’! There’s just a small hook. You have to bring along something you’ve grown, made or found to exchange it with the other diners.
In the spirit of Kai Hau Kai we’re acknowledging that everyone has something they can bring to the table.
Food by the crew that is Feast By Fire.
Note: Because this is a free event, it’s super important that if you ‘buy’ a ticket you commit to being there, and bringing along your ‘trade’.
If life changes, let us know ASAP and we’ll hand the ticket to someone else.
Time 5:30-7:30pm
FEAST MATARIKI 2024
This winter, from 19th to 27th June, we’re celebrating Kai Hau Kai as our inspiration for Feast Matariki.
For Ngāi Tahu, it was originally a way and place that people came together around food, celebrated abundance, feasted and traded excess. One of the features of these gatherings was a hakari or a stage upon which food was placed to emphasise abundance.
So in 2024, with Tīrama Mai, we’re going to recreate the stage at Te Matatiki Toi Ora / The Christchurch Arts Centre. It will be the focus for events there including The Hakari | Feast, The Shortest Meal and this - our version of Kai Hau Kai.
We’re proud that our Ōtautahi events are led by Kaitaki Ngāio Cowell (Ngaati Te Ata Waiohua, Waikato Tainui, Ngāti Porou) and Reese Harrison (Ngāi Tahu).
