You are invited to explore the incredible environment, wildlife, recreational opportunities, and heritage of our iconic estuary during this FREE all-ages, interactive discovery event.
The kanamaluka / Tamar Discovery Day, organised by the Tamar Estuary and Esk Rivers (TEER) Program, is a celebration of the kanamaluka / Tamar estuary and the wonderful diversity of flora and fauna that live there. This FREE community day offers families a fun-filled day out with engaging displays, and activities throughout the day.
What to expect:
- Engaging displays: Learn from a variety of stalls featuring Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service, Tamar NRM, Platypus House, AMC Search, Wallaby Walkabout Tours, among others.

- Special tours: Enjoy discounted tours at Seahorse World and Platypus House—kids go free!
- Family fun: Celebrate Children's Week with hands-on arts and crafts, environmental exhibits, and games designed to educate and entertain.
- Australian Maritime College (AMC Search): Get up close with marine technology used to explore and protect our waterways, including the Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel (WAM-V) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs).
- Birdlife Australia: Discover the amazing bird species that live along the estuary with expert tips on birdwatching and protecting these beautiful creatures.
- Fisheries Tasmania: Learn about responsible recreational fishing in Tasmania and try the fishing simulator, perfect for kids and adults!
- Tamar Estuary and Esk Rivers (TEER) Program: Explore the estuary’s depths with TEER’s Dark Box, an immersive experience where kids can discover the hidden creatures of the Tamar Estuary.
- Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service: Explore Tasmania’s treasures with Discovery Ranger John. Get hands-on with fascinating natural objects from our National Parks and learn about Tasmania’s unique wildlife and ecosystems. 🌏 Learn how you can help protect these beautiful environments for future generations
- Tamar NRM: Dive into the ‘Tray of Sand’ Microplastics Activity to discover how microplastics impact our waterways, explore the hidden world of waterbugs with the Waterbugs Activity Kit, and learn fascinating facts about penguins at the Penguin Display
- Wallaby Walkabout Tours: Explore a display of ancient artefacts, including ochre, stone tools, fungi, and Darwin Glass, fragments of a meteor that struck Tasmania 800,000 years ago. Try your hand at a hands-on art activity using traditional ochres to create paintings on paperbark, offering a fun and immersive connection to Tasmania’s Indigenous heritage.
