Karst Wetlands Exhibition: Artist Talk
Description
This opening talk introduces an exhibition inspired by more than 30 years of snorkelling in the wetlands of Ewens and Piccaninnie Ponds in South Australia’s southeast. Drawing on extensive photographic observations, the artist’s paintings offer a personal interpretation of the shifting light and vivid, saturated colours of these remarkable underwater environments.
The talk will explore the contrasting character of the two sites—Ewens Ponds’ striking natural beauty and the quieter, more mysterious depths of Piccaninnie Ponds, particularly the experience of hovering above its deep chasm. It will also reflect on the fragility of these ecosystems, now under increasing threat from falling groundwater levels, with serious consequences for the rare species that depend on them.
Featuring works from the past 20 years, the exhibition captures not only observed moments but also the enduring memory of these landscapes, evoking the wetlands as they once were.
