Eramboo Artist Environment and Northern Beaches Council are pleased to announce the opening of the solo exhibition Kayfabe the Bastard by 2024 artist-in-residence Katherine Butcher.

The exhibition will showcase her new site-specific work from her residency at Eramboo.

All are invited to a panel discussion and opening reception with music celebrating the culmination of this experimental residency.

The Panel Discussion will be held before the Opening Reception.

Join us for a curated Panel Discussion with Elaway Dalby-Ball (Ecologist and Eramboo Board member), Miranda Korzy (Journalist, Activist and Pittwater Councillor), Jayden Walsh (Ecologist), Angel Ambas-Scutts (final year high school student and sustainability activist) and a representative from the Northern Beaches Resilience Strategy – Withstand. Adapt. Thrive, moderated by Eramboo's inaugural Ambassador, and renowned Australian Cultural Planner, Sue Boaden. They will share their visions for the Far Future, specifically the years 2060-2079, as they reflect on data from tools such as Adapt NSW. Kayfabe, a term borrowed from the world of wrestling, is the ‘willing suspension of disbelief in the moment’. This conversation will grapple with our relationship with the far future through this lens.

The Panel is crucial to Katherine's reflections on climate change and a live score for the exhibition, providing insights into Katherine's artistic material practice.

Following the Panel Discussion, join us from 2 PM - 4 PM for the Opening Reception featuring LIVE music and free coffee cart.

Artist Notes on the Exhibition:

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands across Australia upon which I live and work. In particular I acknowledge the Gayamagal and Garigal of the Eora Nation, upon whose land I made these works. I pay my deep respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

Kayfabe the Bastard merges spatial scan technology, artificial generative tools, and traditional material practices to explore the distant future, climate change forecasts, relationships, and the frozen world of ‘speech acts’ or ‘words that do.’ Central to the work are the phrases “I promise” and “I forgive,” reflecting the uncertainty and ethical dilemmas of a projected future where promises may be knowingly broken. My inertia and fear of failing to “break character” and act on my promises make it necessary to seek forgiveness from future generations.
