KCRW’s Good Food x Grocery Goblin’s Stories In-Store: Gourmet
Description
Some of the best stories in Los Angeles are hiding in plain sight — on grocery shelves, behind deli counters, in the produce aisle. This November, KCRW’s Good Food and Grocery Goblin invite you to an evening of storytelling inspired by the food all around us.
We’re gathering inside The Golden Poppy Market, the wonderfully whimsical boutique bodega in Cypress Park, for a night of essays, poetry, and stories exploring one delicious theme: Gourmet.
Hosted by Vanessa Anderson — the culinary anthropologist behind Grocery Goblin — the evening brings stories from Bill Esparza (Eater, New York Times, Washington Post) Emily Wilson (The Angel, T Magazine, Bon Appetit), Alex Tatusian (San Francisco Chronicle), and Cass Marketos (The Rot), with a special introduction from Good Food’s own Evan Kleiman.
Come early to wander the shop, grab a snack, and enjoy a glass of natural wine by Barra Santos.

About The Golden Poppy Market
On Sunday, April 10th 2022, Michelle Juliette Carr and Brian Wotring are celebrated the grand opening of their whimsical grocery store, The Golden Poppy Market in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Cypress Park. Described aptly by a customer as a “Boutique Bodega”, the sexy 1930’s through a 1970’s lens, design vibe was inspired by swingin’ London’s Biba’s Food Hall. The Golden Poppy Market carries everything from caviar to cat food! As a true Mom n’ Pop operation, Michelle and Brian take great care in selecting organic produce, fresh cut flowers, pantry staples, a wide array of beverages, fine cheese/charcuterie & accoutrement, fresh baked bread by Bub & Grandma’s, a cornucopia of nostalgic candy and fine sweets by Cake Monkey and Valerie Confections.
Though The Golden Poppy is an emporium of indulgence, they carry practical household items like Mrs. Meyer's laundry detergent, cleaners, paper towels and toilet paper. They even have a mini apothecary with a varied array of medicines. Feeling peckish? They offer a rotating menu of delicious prepared foods under their own banner - GoPop!, Heirloom LA, and classic bodega style Italian subs and deli sides by Uncle Paulie’s that one may enjoy on the go or on site in their shady back patio.
