Kelmarna Community Farm's comprehensive 6-part organic gardening course with Judy Keats is back for 2024 to introduce you to all the basics of growing organic food successfully at home. The series is arranged in fortnightly sessions over 12 weeks, with a focused topic for each session moving through all the essential knowledge and skills for a successful home garden.

This course is perfect not only for new gardeners just starting out, but also excellent to give experienced gardeners the opportunity to grow their knowledge and sharpen their skills alongside an expert tutor in organics.

What to expect:

Session 3: Fruit Trees & Pruning

This session with help you give your food forest the best chance at success by looking at how to choose the most suitable specimens for your space. Judy will cover pruning skills and tree training strategies to care for new and existing fruit trees in order to organically manage optimal production, and you'll have the opportunity to get hands on and put theory into practice in the Kelmarna food forest.

[Please note that due to the practical tree pruning component, this is the only session of the OGB series that is weather-dependent, and a rain date has been set for Saturday 31 August 2024 - 9.30am to 12.30pm (3 hours)

Tickets include: 

  • 'Complete Series' = Admission and guided instruction to all 6 x sessions of the Organic Gardening Basics course, including this session; with access to tools and resources at each session
  • 'Single Session' = Admission and guided instruction for this session, with access to tools and resources for practical activities on site

A Complete Series Ticket priced at $370, offers a 10% discount across the course. Single-session Tickets are available at $68.50 each.

  • a notebook and pen (to take notes)
  • a pair of safety glasses (if you prefer to wear your own)
  • a pair of gloves (if you prefer to wear them)

Judy Keats is a permaculture & regenerative agriculture practitioner, and community garden mentor and advisor, with considerable experience establishing, coordinating, and teaching in community gardens across Auckland. Judy is passionate about well-being for people and caring for the environment in which we dwell. She believes that by observing our plants and our changing climate, we can gain insight and a closer connection to the health of our gardens, which is key to the success and optimal yields of a sustainable food system. She is committed to working with communities to foster knowledge and experience towards mastering resilience.
