    Event description

    Kendall PhiloMusica Concert, June 23
A Poet's Love - The Music of Robert Schumann

Pre-Concert Talk, 1 pm - Poetry, Music and Madness (Goetz Richter)

    Performance commences at 2 pm

Robert Schumann was one of the greatest composers of the nineteenth century. Infused with the spirit of Romanticism Schumann's music and life continues to haunt musicians and audiences. Novalis, a founding father of Romanticism, expressed its spirit famously in the demand that "everything must be poeticised". In Robert Schumann's case, a complete commitment to romanticism is tragically embedded in a life that ends in an attempt at suicide and his admission to a mental institution in 1854 two years before his death.

This PhiloMusica event features two of Schumann's greatest works, the song cycle "A Poet's Love (Dichterliebe) op 48" and the grand Quintet in Eflat Major for Piano and Strings op 44.

Jeanell Carrigan (piano) and Goetz Richter (violin) will be joined by emerging young artists from Sydney. Rising singing star, Leon Vitogiannis, violinist Marian Kwon, violist Dana Lee and cellist Rena Tang.
